Start before the playground moment
Joining play is a lot at once: noticing the game, reading the rules, finding the right words, and waiting for an answer. Practicing at home lets the child try one small phrase before the real moment feels too fast.
Give one concrete script
Try a short line such as, 'Can I play too?' or 'What job can I have?' Keep the phrase simple and let the child use words, gesture, or a parent-supported card.
Plan for yes, wait, or no
A good practice plan includes more than a happy yes. Children can rehearse what to do if the answer is 'wait' or 'not now': breathe, choose another game, ask one more calm question, or get parent support.
